Deciphering the Code: 21st Century Teen Slang

Deciphering the Code: 21st Century Teen Slang

What are They Even Saying?

We’ll start this post by reminding all the parents out there of the first rule of teen slang:

It’s for teens.

Try it out at your own peril. At worst, your teens will roll their eyes and groan, and at best, you might score one or two hipster points. Which brings us to another rule. About trying to be the hip parent:

Give up the notion you were ever hip in the first place.

Maybe you were. Maybe you weren’t. Either way, it’s irrelevant. Trying to be contemporary teenage hip will have the opposite effect than you intend: nine times out of ten you’re going to embarrass yourself and your children. We’re offering this list not so you can trade slang with your kids and their friends, but so that when you monitor your teenager’s texts, IMs, DMs, emails, and social media accounts, you’ll have a slightly better chance at understanding what they’re talking about.

Because honestly, texting and chatting have given us more acronyms and funky phrases than military jargon, legalese, and corporate speak combined. It’s an entirely different language, and if you don’t speak it, you might miss what’s happening right under your nose, all day every day – so we scoured the interwebs here, here, and here to compile this list of slang phrases for your edification.
